Enjoy the gastronomy, wines and anchovies
L’Escala is a fishermen’s village. The sea has always been the star and the centre of the cultural and economic activity. Since its beginnings, L’Escala has been active in salting and selling anchovies. L’anxova de L’Escala is a protected denomination of origin, highly appreciated in finest restaurants all over Spain.
If you would like to visit an anchovies manufacturing site, here you have the list:
L’Escala restaurants offer a broad gastronomic proposal, from the typical “pa amb tomaquet i anxoves” (Catalan tomato bread with anchovies) to the Catalan roast beef or Spanish “paellas”. See the list of restaurants in the following link:
A series of events and workshops take place on a yearly basis to promote our wines and cuisine:
- Arrels del Vi fair is held on the Second Easter’s weekend in Sant Marti d’Empuries. It provides the opportunity to taste and buy a broad variety of regional wines (PDO Emporda).
- The Jornades Gastronòmiques del suquet de peix, at the beginning of May. The restaurants taking part in the campaign present various versions of this traditional fisherman’s dish (suquet de peix).
- Festa de l’anxova (Anchovies’ fair), first Sunday of October. Popular tasting of anchovies and Havaneres concert.
